Got a quick story from my past for you
today.
I started working out when I was 12 doing push ups at home & then moved on to using playgrounds to workout.
⠀
I was getting great results without using any weights but I still wanted more so when I finally turned 16 I was allowed to lift weights in PE class.
⠀
I was super excited as I had been learning a lot about bodybuilding and I could finally put to use all that I had been learning.
⠀
So I
started doing super sets, drops sets, 21’s, squatting, chest pressing, curling & overhead pressing.
⠀
I had a lot of fun doing this and slowly over the years I started to do less and less bodyweight exercises. (BIG Mistake)
⠀
And if I did do bodyweight I would do it all slow & controlled like a bodybuilder.
⠀
I put on size, strength & looked great in my shirts but I stopped being an athlete.
⠀
I grew up playing basketball
& slowly let go of this sport in exchange for bodybuilding.
⠀
I didn’t think much of it until I went hard with bodybuilding:
I was training 6 days a week & pounding my muscles into submission in every workout for 2 whole years.
⠀
Then one day my buddy invited me to play indoor basketball & I said hell yeah let’s do it!
⠀
I was a great 3 point shooter back then so I was excited to show him my
skills
⠀
And then it happened
⠀
As I grabbed the ball & prepared to shot my first 3 point shot in years...
⠀
MY SHOULDERS WOULDN’T MOVE!
⠀
They were stiff as a rock & I had an epiphany:
⠀
All those slow & controlled reps made me lose my athleticism & flexibility.
⠀
"I I kept “bodybuilding” I would be slow, stiff & useless anytime I would play sport"
⠀
What would be the point of looking buff if I couldn’t even
play basketball without feeling stiff?
In that moment I realized the importance of balance in my workouts
⠀
I could do bodybuilding but I also needed to do athletic exercises in order to remain agile, strong & explosive for sports.
⠀
So I started to do more athletic exercises & workout at parks again - climb trees, use monkey bars & jump on benches
I was super stiff & it took a few
consistent months to loosen up but with practice I regained the mobility in my shoulders.
⠀
The Point I am trying to make with this story is to not be like me!
If you are gonna lift weights & wanna play sports remember to also do athletic exercises such as:
Crawling, jumping, climbing & sprinting
⠀
These exercises don’t require equipment
& you can do them at home or at a park like I showed in this video:
