Glad you guys are
taking action to not only optimize your training but also your sleep.
Now for today's topic...
There is a lot of debate on whether doing dips really low is bad or good for you.
I personally have always been doing dips past 90 degrees since I started
training.
I don't feel any discomfort & like to go super low in order to do other calisthenic moves like air walking from a low position or doing russian dips.
So how low should you
dip?
Answer: It depends on what your body can handle & what your goal is.
1) If your body doesn't have the mobility & extended ROM (Range Of Motion) to go past 90 degrees then you shouldn't do it.
Reason being is
because you must first work on creating more ROM so you can load your shoulders safely.
If you don't you will exceed your current limitations & be prone to injury.
2) If you have good shoulder mobility & going lower doesn't create any discomfort by all means dip
low!
3) If your goal is muscle building then dipping at 90 degrees is optimal since it will create more tension in your muscles. If you go past 90 degrees it's more of a stretch & you will loose a lot of tension.
So how low you can dip depends on your body's
ability to handle the stress.
When I coach clients I always make sure that they dip as low as they feel comfortable. Slowly overtime most of them start dipping lower than when they started but I never force them to overstretch if they are not physically able to.
Hope this
helps, now go do some russian dips! (I love that variation, it looks so cool)
